"Reel crappy" is more like it! Jul 29, 2007
By Goldengate
"Goldengate"
I bought this today at my local hardware outlet... and three frustrating hours later, returned it... Here are my pro's and con's:
Pros:
* Nice color, blends into any house or garden
* Inexpensive
* Doesn't cause skin irritation, vomiting or hives (ok, that's a stretch, but I couldn't think of a third pro and I wanted three)
Cons:
* Flimsy plastic, cheaply made
* Connector to water supply line is plastic, not brass, and despite much tightening, mine dripped and dripped.
* Does NOT hold a 100 foot 5/8" hose. Not even close.
I'm going to order a metal "professional" model on Amazon that's about 3x the price of this...but reviews are very positive and it looks like it will last. This thing will NOT last.

Good product, but could be much better. May 27, 2011
By PDX_engineer Update: After the third use, it's back to leaking again... I had to drop another star.
I got this item because my hose spigot is located inside my garage, and I wanted something to reel the hose up and get it off the floor. This design works great... mounts on the wall right over the spigot, reels 50' of black Goodyear hose up nicely, but it could have been better. I'll tell you why it only gets three stars.
First star deduction: This thing leaked right out of the box!! Not cool. I almost sent it back, but then thought, "if this one leaks, who's to say the next one won't", then I read the reviews about it leaking, and someone saying it will 'eventually leak'. So, being one of those 'I think I can fix anything' kind of guys, I decided to take it apart. I took the valve assembly apart and found it's just a plastic sleeve with double O-rings. Very simple. It didn't have much grease in there either. So, I went down to Home Depot and bought some 'waterproof' silicone grease (found in the aisle with all the faucet/drain repair parts; it's like $3.50 for a little tub of it). I cleaned the entire valve assembly, then slathered it in the silicone grease, coating each O-ring separately, then reassembling. I also put a strip of aluminum duct tape on the backing plate to make a slight 'spacer' to make the valve fit-up a bit tighter. I screwed the backing plate on, coated the inside of the lead hose with silicone grease and slid that back over the port, tightened everything up, and it's seals perfectly!! No leaks, turns easily... works like it should.
The second star deduction come from the price and quality. This thing is all plastic, which isn't that bad (it'll never rust), but they are injection molded parts and there's some nasty flash around the mold lines... sharp flash edges. That's pretty cruddy part quality. And then to turn around and ask nearly $36 for the thing (especially with it leaking right out of the box) is too much. We have a couple of those floor hose caddies with the adjustable handle... those have much more plastic and parts, and they were cheaper (like $20 on sale) and they don't leak. How can this smaller, simpler unit be more expensive???
So, it's a decent little unit, but it only gets 3-stars from me.

Unbreakable Nov 09, 2008
By Jack Welch I have had this model on our house for 12 years and it continues to serve well. I also have two other similar hose reels by Suncast that I have repaired many times over the years....breaks off the siding...other plastic breaks, but am now replacing both Suncasts with this model Ames. I think they will outlast the house. Great product.

Better than Suncast Nov 24, 2010
By George H This would be a 4 star product except for two issues.
1. The inlet (leader) line supplied that goes from your faucet to the reel is very poor quality. My first reel leaked twice here until I replaced the inlet hose with an old piece of better quality hose. At one location I needed a longer leader anyway, so replaced it immediately.
2. The instructions say to mount this with the hose guide going down as shown in the picture. This really needs to be mounted with the guide going horizontal so you can pull the hose out and roll it back in easily.
With that said I still bought another one of these instead of the less expensive Suncast. The Suncast had bad reviews for cheap plastic parts. I think this one is better and has performed well after fixing the inlet hose and changing the mounting orientation.

a small thing woulda made a BIG difference Sep 01, 2009
By San Diego Highwayman recieved this t-day
went to install it in my well's pump house -- fit nicely
got it all installed and turned on the well pump -- promptly srayed the whole interior of the pump house :(
the hose gasket, part #11 in the exploded parts diagram, failed to seal the connection satisfactorialy. Tightening the connection with 2 pairs of pliers slowed, but didn't stop the leakin. borrowin other washers from other water equip I happen to have didn't help either.
wasted a LOT of time fartin around with leaky fittin till I finally hit on a solution -- squeezed a bead of clear silicone round the inside of the female supply hose connector -- then seated the rubber gasket into the siliconed connection and tightened it up to pump male hose connection -- let it set up -- turned it on -- whatta ya know? NO more leak ;)
cain't understand why a *fitted* hose gasket wern't supplied WITH this product -- one that came with it fit poorly -- as did others I tried -- didn't seal completely
Hmmmm
that's *MY* rant fer the day
NOW we'll see how well the reel performs over time ;)
