Reel Leaky Nov 03, 2006
By G in CA While the hose reel looks nice, the included feeder hose leaked at the metal fitting (not the washer), which I had to replace. The reel leaked at the plastic part where the main hose attaches to the reel (the O-rings needed replacement). And worst of all, the plastic hose connection for attachment of the main hose to the reel was so poorly made it looked essentially stripped. Using extreme care I managed to attach the hose successfully. So...you take your chances with this product.

Does all it's supposed to do Mar 04, 2005
By DDJ Holds a lot of 5/8" hose. Doesn't leak. Reels up beautifully. My first one has been out in the sun for 5-6 years and is still as good as new. Big improvement over Ames' older metal hose reel which always rusted through and leaked through the support arm.
Though I reported the lower price to Amazon, Amazon did not reduce price to that of my local Ace Hardware store; so I passed up Amazon to save $16 ($39.95), and bought my second reel from Ace.

a piece of water equipment that rusts? Jul 03, 2006
By Matt Ward Most of the product is plastic, but the part that is in constant contact with water is metal...corrosive metal. This is the axel that rotates as the reel is turned. The water enters this hollow metal tube to get to the hose on the reel. Why or why would they make this part of rustable material. Mine lasted about one year before rusting out. A copper, or even plastic tube with a galvanized steel outer sleeve would have given it strength plus kept the water from rusting the pipe. I'd have paid the extra dollar this would have cost to have a product that would have laster 10 years instead of one.

Best Wall Mount Hose Reel You'll Find Nov 04, 2010
By Mark in NH After my painting contractor had a mishap with my Ames True Temper Hose King Hose Reel, I desparately searched local retailers for a replacement. Not finding one (as it's the end of the season), I resorted to buying something that looked similar in a popular "box store". After the first 3 assembly steps, I realized that what I had purchased was basically junk. I promptly returned it to the store (partially assembled)and proceeded with an on-line search.
Lo and behold, there was the Hose King on Amazon at a price that was not much greater than what I had paid for a cheap facimile.
The long and short...this is a 200 foot capaciy reel that easily carries its stated load. It's made of rugged components, is relatively easy to assemble (if you're good at following instructions), and is sensibly disigned to mount to 16 inch on center studs. Mine mounts to a foundation wall, requiring masonry screws. Because the thing is quality engineered and manufactured, it fit perfectly on the mounts for my previous Hose King Reel (which was probably 10 years old and would still be around if my painter hadn't smashed it in a freak accident).
Anyway, you can't go wrong with this product. I'm certain it's the best you'll find of its type.
One more note....due to some kind of packaging error at the factory, the box was short one part while containing a duplicate of another. I contacted the manufacturer directly and the replacement part was sent at no charge. I received it within a few days. Customer service at Ames was excellent.
