Excellent quality Sep 14, 2008
By Creative Earth I've used several cheaper hose reels from different manufacturers (I have an acre of garden and over 1000 ft of hoses scattered around the property) and this one is much, much better quality. It is all metal, the central "axle" or shaft is machined from solid aluminum (not just cast, or worse yet, plastic) with a good sized snap ring on the end, hose fittings are solid brass and very sturdy, the handle is sturdy and well made (and "keyed" to the central shaft with a bolt that goes through it and the shaft, not just a "set screw" type friction attachment that will eventually wear and spin on the shaft when you try to roll up a long/heavy hose), and the supplied hose (to connect to your faucet) is heavy duty. If you know something about metal machining and understand the difference between solid machined parts and cheaper cast (or even worse, stamped) metal parts you'll appreciate the quality of this hose reel. I'm going to replace all of my cheaper reels (which are all leaking and malfunctioning or falling apart in one way or another after just a couple years) with this model. And Lowe's has it for just $75. Compared to the much lower quality (and mostly plastic) reels that sell for $50-$60 or more, it is more than worth every penny.

Finally an Excellent Product Jan 21, 2009

I am a Mechanical and Software Engineer and am rarely even "pleased" with a purchase.
This product is currently priced on amazon for $140.
I purchased this unit from Home Depot for only $89 !!
Finally a team of people got together and built an excellent piece of work to be proud of.
Notable "+++"
The die cast aluminum frame and reel is strong, lightweight, durable, easy to clean, and has a beautiful finish. It spins freely and smoothly right out of the box. Not like some cheesy plastic thing at all.
The axle and bearing assemblies for the reel and handle have a confident and smooth response with no wiggle or play. The handle plastic is very rigid and comfortable.
The mounting was a breeze due to large enough flanges to which the bolts mount, which allowed some minor alignment adjustments and for power tools to gain access. Mounting was really easy with 2 people.
Nice touch providing mounting template on the box panel. I didn't use it, but many people problaby will.
The shelf on top of the unit will come in handy and slotted so it will stay clean and dry.
No leaks or drips.
Its pretty :-)
If I had to say any "---"
The diagrams and instructions were small and not of high quality print making it difficult to read (I think it's pretty obvious how to mount it anyway).
The input hose connection socket was stuck at first, but with a little wiggling around it now spins freely (I think locktight was added for some reason).
The shelf on top is slotted which allows hose ends to fall through. Possibly a different pattern would solve the problem (holes instead of slots ?).
This is a very nice piece of work .... they should be proud.
Nice work Ames !! I will look for their products from now on.
Finally impressed.

Ames Wall Mount Reel Jun 22, 2008

Everything that you need to mount is in the box except a masonry drill bit. I mounted into brick and needed a 1/2" masonry drill bit. Masonry anchors included. Well built, solid. Regarding the stiffness previously described in another review: Not noticeable after mounting to wall. Most importantly, no LEAKS! Would have liked a longer faucet connection hose. Wife can reel in hose with no problem. Highly recommended.

Far Superior to Any Plastic Reel May 25, 2009
By Dan Dalton About 10 years ago I bought 2 "heavy duty" plastic reels, one for the front and one for the back of my house. I drilled holes in my brick and mounted them to the wall. They worked fine for several years, and I loved them while they lasted. However, after about 9-10 years the one in front developed thousands of tiny cracks and the next thing I knew it splintered into dozens of pieces and literally fell apart. The one in the back gets less sun and has lasted a year or two longer, but I just noticed that it is now full of tiny cracks and is on the verge of falling apart.
I replaced my front plastic reel with this cast cast aluminum reel a couple of years ago. I bought a carbide masonry drill bit at Lowes to drill holes in my brick to mount it. The wall anchors were super strong, and I'm sure that they will NEVER come loose like my old 1/4-inch lead ones used to.
The reel came with heavy-duty brass fittings, has worked flawlessly and looks fantastic. It is much stronger than my old plastic reel and only costs about 30% more. In my mind no plastic reel can possibly compare with the quality, strength, longevity, and aesthetics of this reel. I'm planning to replace my back reel with one of these this summer.
The only down side is that it only holds 125 feet of hose. I wish they made a larger size...

Ames True Temper 2391200A Decorative Bronze Wall Mount Hose Reel Jun 28, 2010

Agree with the other reviews. I have no idea how much my wife has spent over the years buying and replacing plastic hose reels, hose boxes, etc., but it is probably $1,000. When we moved to new house (last time or get new wife!), I had the task of moving all her hoses and stuff for watering all the plants and the pool. When I looked it over, it was clearly all nearly at the end of their lifecycle. Went to HomeDepot looking for a more permanent fix and on the upper shelf I spied this item from O-A. At $89 per, it was twice as much as another plastic fantastics with all their fancy advertisement laden boxes. However when I got one down and took it out of the box, this old retired engineer was smiling. I remember a similar reaction when I first saw O-A shovels in the Smithonian. I knew I had found my answer. Attractive, built smart and with the strength of a freight train (yeah, I know readers are thinking about the choices for wives...). Got two of them and later, two more (hose reels, not wives). Maybe my great grandkids will need to replace them, but not sooner. OBTW: Look in the box and read the guide so you know if you need to pick up a masonary bit and a ratchet with extension. Also check to see if you need to have the store swap out the some of the lead sinkers so they are all the same size and also the correct size. Folks mess with those all the time and not unusual for them to be all different sizes or smashed and buggered up due to customer frutzing around before returning it as 'too hard to do'.
