lasted less than 1 year - always a problem May 21, 2007
By B. Conover I purchased this trimmer last year. It has already died, but I was so frustrated with it, that's OK. (if interested, you can see my 3-star review right after purchase)
The automatic feed never worked right: I had to continuously unplug the thing and advance the line: the auto feed depends on a sprocket system that allows the spool to advance: but as soon as dust gets inside (which happens immediately), the sprocket binds up, and the line does not feed out.
Also the black guard that protects the user from debris getting kicked back is fastened with one small screw in soft plastic: the vibrations caused by normal usage caused this screw to strip out in the second use. Getting the item back to B&D for warranty repair would have cost me more than a new unit, so I did my own repair last year. The construction seems rally cheap and therefore potentially unsafe to me.
This trimmer has been nothing but trouble since I bought it. It's better to use a less-polluting electric trimmer (not gas powered), but this one is not well made.

Automatic feed was Always feed Nov 04, 2007
By Robert P. Sterner We got this thing right after it came out. It wasn't and automatic feed so much as it was an always feed. It basically just always fed out line, using it up quickly. It ended up being cheaper to buy a new weed eater (not this brand or with that feature) than it was to keep buying line. About the only positive was the service from the company. They'd send replacement parts to us when we asked at least for the first year. There was a small plastic piece which controls the feed of the line. It was constantly wearing down and melting. This just didn't work. The replacements had a piece of metal on it to try and help, but it didn't really do much.

Excellent Jul 22, 2007
By Boston

A portion of my yard was not accessible all spring and summer due to construction. The grass and weeds grew to 4' tall. Tried this trimmer and edger, which does not state it is a weed wacker, and did it ever take care of those weeds. The string feeder works great, bought extra spools but did not need them for this job. It is easy to handle (I use a cane) and had no problem at all. No gas smell, not noisy. I cannot say enough good things about this Black & Decker product.

Definitely not a grasshog Sep 29, 2007
By LV Henderson. Horrible product. Almost caught fire from burned out motor on first useage. It started smoking after six minutes of light use. Do not buy. Buy one of the Black & Decker grasshog models instead. They need to recall this thing before someone gets injured.

works for me Jul 20, 2010
By K.B. This trimmer is very similar to the old B&D I had which was great until, for some unknown reason, I banged it on the ground to advance the string which broke the auto feed mechanism. Anyway, I ordered this trimmer and have used it several times. It works great - just like the old one! It is light weight and easy to handle. I have a long driveway and sidewalks and I can edge everything quickly. Just don't bang it on the ground!
