I got the 28" splitting axe and liked it so much I got the 28" chopper. At that time I got the Fiskars sharpener and let me tell you that after a few passes I got both axes to shave hairs off of my forearm. These cost a little more than the regular axes but if you take pride in your tools and like functional beauty they are well worth it. To those that say that the handle still breaks well you can break just about anything if you mis-use it. I hear the warranty is pretty good.

This axe is a lightweight, yet powerful cutter. It's great from removing branches from downed trees and for cutting through the tree itself. Very versatile. It will split wood, or cut through a large tree trunk. Handle is virtually unbreakable. I've used it for a pry bar. The cutting edge can easily be sharpened such that it will shave the hair off your arm!

The right axe? If you plan serious heavy duty use, get the Fiskars 7854 Super Splitting Axe instead.
I was deciding between the 4.25 pound Fiskars 7854 Super Splitter and bought the 2.25 pound 7859 for two reasons: 1. I could get it locally (Sears) and 2. a review on Amazon strongly said the 7859 was better. However, the 7859 is only better for light to medium duty--it lacks the mass to go through hard, knotty and particularly fibrous wood. I just used the 7859 to split a cord of month-old 20+ inch post oak. The splitting was very tough going, even after I perfected my form. A fast swing is necessary for this axe. Given this axe's lack of mass, one needs to focus much more on speed. Even so, most good swings for the early splits on large rounds resulted in only a crack, which I would have to finish out with a wedge and sledge.
The teflon coat prevents the axe from being razor sharp out of the box. So the sharpener is important from day 1 and should probably be purchased with the axe. The handle felt long enough to me, though if I had been splitting with a long-handled maul recently, I think the 24" handle of the 7859 would have felt short and made for many swing-throughs until form were adjusted. I only had one swing through drop below my 24" chopping block. It is always a good idea to keep one's legs apart and perpendicular to the swing with any axe.
In sum, I wish I went with the heavier 7854.

I was not sure how functional the axe would be because of the light head weight. No reason to worry; the design makes up for the lack of mass in the head. I had no trouble splitting large live oak and heart cedar logs with this axe. This one is definitely a keeper.

you need to get used to the short handle, but after that you won't use anything else. incredible splitter for how light it is. excellent camp tool. stays sharp , excellent metals
