Pruning Jul 01, 2010
By Beverly E. Van Citters

After reading a previous review---I wondered, before the item arrived, if I made an appropriate purchase. Rest assured that the Fiskars name continues to mean quality. I especially liked the feel of these soft-grip pruners and the thorn removal section. It took me about 3 tries to get the thorn removal done swiftly and easily...but once accomplished---pruning my roses and preparing them for the vase..is easy. I also appreciated the element near the thorn remover where you can score the ends of the stems to allow more water for the flower in the vase. For those rose gardeners----this is a must have item!

By Will These were not as sharp as I had hoped. They are better for indoor pruning or light outdoor pruning.

Great Bypass Pruner Jun 07, 2009

I love this pruner. It is easy to handle, can even open and close with one hand, and the thorn remover is a great feature. Also Fiskars is a well known brand.
Watch out Nov 10, 2011
By Robert S. Eisenberg These shears clip stems fine, but the orange safety slide doesn't work, and the blades open up when not in use. I've tried putting a rubber band around the handles to keep them together, and that usually helps. But I wouldn't have bought these shears if I'd known about the safety problem.
Started getting dull very quickly Aug 18, 2010
By buru buru piggu Fiskars is a respected brand and I'd buy from them again, just not this particular pruner. The sliding lock mechanism is easy to operate and the pruners have a good spring to them.
When I first got this pruner, it worked great. The cuts were clean and straight. After about three weekends of pruning (mostly rose bushes), the blades started dulling and no longer cut cleanly every time. Softer plant parts like dahlias flower stalks get squished and caught between the blades, causing them to stick together and not spring back open. This can leave a messy cut with jagged ends of plant tissue and cambium exposed, especially with stems that have soft, fibrous outer layers of bark, like green rose branches. For woodier cuts like camellia, it is still fine.
Sometimes holding the pruners upside-down from the orientation pictured in the product photo helps deliver a clean cut. So, I rate this pair of pruners only average, because it has the same problem as my previous pruner with squishing stems.
