Hula-Ho Weeder..Must Have For Senior Gardeners Apr 20, 2009
By P. Smith A neighbor was showing off her garden one day. I noticed it was quite weed free and asked her secret as she has serious back problems like I do. She reached out and grabbed her old Hula-Ho that was leaning against the fence. "This is all I need"..and she went about demonstrating her ability with the tool.
After checking around the local hardware stores in vain, I started searching the web. Wouldn't you know..my favorite internet shopping destination had just what I was looking for. I've only had it about a week so can't comment on longevity, allow it seems very sturdily constructed. I expect with proper care it will last a long time.
I thought my weeding days were over and the chore would fall completely to my husband as I have advanced degenerative disc disease and arthritis of the spine. The Hula-Ho gave me back some gardening dignity (big smile). The handle is tall enough that there is no hunching over. The blade, although it doesn't appear to be very sharp, goes right through young weeds and either cuts them off or lifts them out of the ground, roots and all, depending on size. The easy back and forth motion that you use with this tool to do the job doesn't put too much strain on my spine. One note here...if you have really well established, thick, deep rooted weeds, you might have to pull them out by hand the first time around or put some elbow grease into the job. A job for someone with a good back. From then on it's just a matter of a little back and forth (like vacumming)action to keep weeds easily under control. Obviously we're talking about using this in garden soil..not an area that's never been worked before. I'm very happy with this purchase and would recommend it highly to anyone who gardens regularly.

Dutch Scuffle Hoe May 12, 2007

A good way to take care of weeds in gardens too large for hand pulling. Quickly and easily cuts them off at the soil line. You can clean out large areas of weeds in a short time and frequent use will stop weeds from returning.

It's a great tool May 19, 2008

I just started using one of these hoes, and what a pleasure!
The motion is similar to using a vacuum cleaner, back and forth, back and forth, level with but just under the surface of the soil. I found it worked best on small weeds just after a rain. Mine hasn't been sharpened, however - I'll have to see to that because at present it does not very well cut off tough big weeds and I end up mostly pulling them by hand.
Generally weeding is easier after a rain. I got a lot done in a far shorter time than I would have doing it by hand - and actually finished :-)

Works. Seems flimsy May 24, 2011

I wanted to use this instead of a conventional hoe for my vegetable garden. I had heard lots of good things about it (or a similar product) on some organic gardening sites so looked forward to upgrading my technology. The item arrived on time and in good condition. The business end of the item is two metal pieces that are attached together with a couple of screws. Although not actually loose, the blade (totally dull) flexes so much that it gives the impression that it will come off at any moment.
One must use a different action (compared to a hoe) when weeding and it does well enough in fairly loose soil. But, if the soil is crusty or the area is heavily weeded, it does not work satisfactorily at all. For those areas I must go to my old reliable (and sharp) hoe. Leaves me wondering why I now have two tools instead of just one. Is there another brand that I should have bought instead?

Easy to Use Aug 08, 2007

The Hula-Ho Weeder has been around a long time. This purchase is a replacement for an earlier model that lasted for several years. It works great around tender plants that cannot be weeded with a line trimmer. I usually have to sharpen the blade to get the best use out of it.
