Will work but is very flimsy Feb 21, 2010
By N. Johns I ordered this thinking it looked reasonably solid, but was very disappointed when it arrived. The lid is very thin and pliable, which I am worried the sun will quickly distort, and when the cold frame is lightly tapped with my foot, the whole thing jiggles with flimsiness. I set it up anyways since I already bought it but don't expect it to make it through an entire season.
I bought this because I rent and didn't want to construct something out of heavy materials so when I eventually move I wouldn't have to deal with the bulk. If I had known the poor quality of this product, I would have gone to the recycled building materials store and bought a few wood-framed windows for $10 each which would have made for a stronger, more aesthetically pleasant, bigger, and cheaper cold frame.
I wish I could have my $70 instead of this thing.

pretty good Mar 27, 2007
By Faye Ameredes It was a little bit hard to put together - screws were really tight. When you lift the lids, they get "hung up" and do not set back down properly. It requires a lot of adjusting to get the lids to set down, so I just try not to open the lids very far which means struggling to reach in to care for the plants.

Built to fall apart Apr 16, 2011
By Aaron Kreider This is poorly designed and I expect it to fall apart.
It cannot hold its shape. The long sides of the box bulge out. In my case this causes a gap in the lid that allows air to get in.
The box is made of weak pieces of plastic that break and bend. My lid already has a major crack.
Propping up the lid is very difficult because the arm doesn't fit into the socket. I broke one of my sockets after several days of use.
Cold frames are a great idea (I tested my soil temperature as 10 degrees warmer in this than in the regular ground, at 1-2 inches deep), but this is a poor implementation. Do not buy.
If you want something cheap, I recommend building a hoop house using EMT pipe, 4-6 mm plastic sheets, and wood. I am an amateur and built two hoop houses that are 10-100 times stronger than this.

Well engineered frame. Apr 03, 2011
By Stanley J. Laskos, Jr. I was at first taken back by the apparent thinness of the plastic sides and top. But they were molded plastic and the ribbing made them more roomy and durable. The edge, top, and side framing is thick extruded aluminum, someone did some real good engineering in the simple but strong assembly of these items. You do need one Philips screwdriver with a good tip and hefty handle to make the assembly a breeze. Just follow the pictures carefully. All the parts are clearly labeled themselves and in the assembly instructions. The large frame and sides can be fully assembled inside and easily carried outdoors by one person, then the 2 tops slipped into place. With all the other fine design, the way the two top pieces "hinge" to the peak "beam" was surprizingly tempermental when lifting them higher than parallel. The recessed molding of the two lids gives you more height than you would imagine by looking at the spec's and picture. There are anchor holes in the bottom of each corner "foot" that allow you to pin this to the ground if you wish. After years of pounding together a homemade frame from plastic sheet and wood one by ones.... I'm very happy with this cold frame.

"Gourds gone wild gal"
This product was easy to put together but could not accomodate two full flats of plants and kept falling apart when used.
