Great Hose Reel Apr 28, 2011
By RTC I've had one of these sitting outside in Florida for 10 years. It is finally starting to disintegrate from the sun but it has served me well all this time. Hopefully the latest version hasn't had too many "Improvements". This reel works just fine! Mine sits on the ground and I can tote it anywhere it is needed. You will have to guide the hose on by hand while you crank it in or it will jam up. Your foot on the front lower cross bar will keep it steady while you crank and the tote bar folds backwards out of the way. There is a rotating hose connection on the end opposite the crank that connects to the hose bib and I've had no trouble with it for 10 years. Just a plain, simple, hose reel that works and lasted 10 years. That's why I bought another one!
I will edit this review when I get the new one (5-7 days).
New one is just like the old one - great!

Pretty good garden hose reel at a fair price. Jul 16, 2011

My old garden hose was stored on a wall mounted hangar that required some effort to carefully rewind after each use but that still resulted in some annoying kinks in the hose. I decided to give this Suncast "Hosehandler" hose reel a try.
Positives: >No assembly of the reel required. OK connection instructions with diagrams. >Good length and quality leader hose (approx. 4 feet) to connect faucet to the reel's in-tube connector. This allows some space between the reel and the wall faucet to maneuver the reel as needed. >The leader hose-reel-garden hose connector/interface in/out tube DOES NOT LEAK! This is a major weak link among many of the other hose reels I've researched online. *Please note: I used teflon lube (Magic Lube) and teflon tape at all the connections to prevent leakage. >Intuitive design of winding the hose into a groove on the reel farthest away from the connector/ interface to prevent sharp bends and kinks. >Fairly easy to rewind but one has to guide the hose and apply tension to evenly rewind and avoid kinks. *Please Note: I dumped my old hose and got a Gilmour 10-58100 8-ply Flexogen Hose 5/8-Inch-by-75-Foot, Green also purchased from Amazon.* It helps immensely to use a top quality hose with any type of reel. I always straighten out the extended portion of the hose before starting to rewind. >100 feet capacity (have to wind it up fairly tight to fit hoses longer than 75ft.). >Hose pressure is good even with most of it wound up in the reel; only a few seconds to get water out of a 75ft. hose. >OK quality plastic. >The leader hose-reel-garden hose connector/interface tube appears to be detachable and replaceable. >Portable, light yet stable. Can be moved to other faucets using the carrying handle. >Amazon price is 34.99 and includes free shipping. >Construction appears good: Made in USA!
Slight negatives: >Durability of the plastic remains to be seen. Remember, most plastics won't be able to withstand over tightening or abuse. >Design of the fold away handle is weak. I decided to just keep it retracted and still rewind effortlessly just turning the main arm of the reel crank. >Reel sits low to the ground so one has to kneel (wall mounting is optional). I just sit on a small footstool to prevent knee/back pain.
In Conclusion: An affordable, relatively easy to use, well designed plastic hose reel that helps organize a garden hose; keep it out of the way, and prevent damage/kinking. I've only had the hose reel for about a month so long term durability remains to be seen. I'm so satisfied with it, I've purchased another one for my front yard.

Difficult to use Aug 05, 2011
By Thomas R Hitchner Sturdy but the short lever and small diameter coil mean that it is difficult to roll anything but a short hose. Probably can handle 50' OK, but not 100'.

Garden hose holder Nov 07, 2011
By Joy4857 This is not strong enough to hold a long house. I wanted it to sit on the ground and pull the hose out, but it isn't sturdy enought to do that. I crinked up the house where it attached as well.

connection leaks Oct 12, 2011
By gardenmom I bought two of these. The weak point in the design is the plastic tube that you attach the nozzle to. It's way too soft and flimsy, and strips very easily. I was able to make one connection work, with a lot of effort, but the second one leaks and I'm going to have to toss the new hose real and replace it with a more industrial strength one. It's too bad, because the overall design is quite good.
